Assistant Nurse Manager - Day of Surgery Admissions (DOSA)

The Assistant Nurse Manager will provide leadership to Day of Surgery Admissions (DOSA) by managing direct patient care nursing functions to ensure that health services, medical care, medical/health professions education, and evidence-based practice research programs are delivered effectively and efficiently. Positions in this job family will have direct patient care responsibilities. Efforts will focus on planning, organizing, directing, evaluating, and improving health care operations, clinical and education programs of clinical departments.

Duties to include:

Human Resources Management

Hiring

  • Hire or assist in hiring nursing unit staff through effective and timely recommendations.
Staff Development
  • Develop and manage the talents, strengths and behaviors of assigned staff as directed by the DOSA Nurse Manager.
  • Assists in matters of promotion, transfers and disciplinary action, as directed by the DOSA Nurse Manager.
  • Coaches staff to participate in team decision-making and actively seeks participation from assigned staff on decision-making and customer service improvement activities.
  • Provides staff incentives/rewards for contributions towards achievement of service excellence.
Performance Management
  • Completes staff evaluations, for assigned staff, on time with written, solid justification.
  • Assure staff members are compliant with competencies, policies, procedures and regulations.
Employee Labor Relations
  • Understand and apply appropriately the provisions in the union contracts.
  • Creates an atmosphere which provides for effective recruitment and retention of qualified staff.
Other
  • Encourages staff/employees to meet or exceed customer needs and expectations.
  • Ensures that all employees are treated with respect and in a manner consistent with University policies related to equal employment opportunity and diversity.

Financial Management
  • Actively help manage operating expenses for the unit name/ clinic name by monitoring the unit/clinic's operating budget.
  • Review financial reports and provide insights to budget variances to nurse leaders.
  • Recommend budget ideas, resources and cost containment strategies through participation in the development of the unit operating budget, reviewing staffing plan, developing a plan for minor equipment and furniture replacement, reviewing service contracts, planning for new supply costs, etc.
  • Assists the 5 South / 4 South / 2BT Nurse Manager in developing a staffing plan and is open to creativity in staff scheduling/flexibility.

Operations, Standards of Care, Regulatory Compliance, Quality and Patient Satisfaction
  • Collaborate with nurse leaders to identify Quality Management and patient satisfaction opportunities for improvement.
  • Incorporates the principles of Service Excellence to ensure positive patient/customer relations.
  • Implement and maintain standards and quality plans.
  • Identifies inefficiencies in current practice/processes, demonstrates tolerance for change and develops a means to enhance the process.
  • Consistently makes sound judgments after gathering factual, objective information.
  • Creates and maintains a workplace of choice/ which motivates employees to work at optimal efficiency; encourages staff to regularly establish goals and objectives toward career development.
  • Engage staff in meeting plan goals.

Patient Care/Services Delivery
  • Supervise care delivery and assist in coordinating patient care teams on the unit to maximize customer service and continuity of care.
  • Assists the Nurse Manager in developing flexible staffing and reallocating priorities to ensure optimal patient care.
  • Serve as a resource for patient care problems.
  • Will have/be scheduled in direct patient care 50% of time.

Planning and Goal Management
  • Collaborate with nursing leaders to develop and implement unit/clinic or division strategic plans.
  • Uses customer feedback in planning and providing service.

Communication/ Collaboration
  • Communicate with physicians, staff and other health care providers on a regular basis to promote effective and efficient operations within the unit/clinic.
  • Communicate with patients, families, and staff to address and resolve issues.
  • Utilizes human resources data and budgetary information to formulate recommendation to Nurse Manager and/or Directors/Clinical Functions.

Education Programs
  • Provide evaluative feedback for staff members and health care students.
  • Coaches the staff in implementation of standards of care, professional development, promotes staff specialty & clinical certifications, adherence to the standards of regulatory bodies (i.e., The Joint Commission, OSHA, and other regulatory bodies as appropriate).
  • Work with clinical instructors/educators to facilitate clinical education experiences.
  • Invests in own continuous learning and skill enhancement.

Research Administration
  • Support unit evidence based practice research initiatives by facilitating the incorporation of quality management and evidence based practices in nursing care.
  • Supports changes in nursing care using evidence based practice.

Percent of Time: 100%
Schedule: Primarily day shift hours M-F, extension of shift as needed. Admin call 2-3 times per year, 7 days each occurrence.
Pay Grade: 5A - https://hr.uiowa.edu/pay/guide-pay-plans

Required Qualifications
  • A Bachelor's degree in Nursing is required.
  • Current license to practice nursing in Iowa is required by date of hire.
  • 1+ years of nursing experience with demonstrated skills in leadership.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with computer software applications (such as Microsoft programs)
  • Demonstrates time management, organization of workload, delegation, attention to detail and thoroughness.
  • Collaborates and develops effective interpersonal relationships with nursing staff, medical staff, interdisciplinary teams, and other hospital departments.
  • Demonstrates effective teaching skills for staff and patient education.
  • Professional job-related experience fostering or promoting a welcoming and respectful work/academic environment where people of all backgrounds and perspectives feel welcomed and appreciated; or demonstrated the ability to do so.

Desirable Qualifications
  • Experience in a large academic medical center.
  • Experience in a union environment.
