Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The College of Liberal Arts, at the University of Texas at Arlington, a Carnegie Research I institution, invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor working at the intersection of the arts and humanities with artificial intelligence and emerging technologies, beginning in fall 2025. Candidates must have a terminal degree in an academic field housed in a department in the College of Liberal Arts (see listing of departments below).

Broadly, the committee is seeking candidates who will work in one or more of the following areas:

Using AI in Teaching / Pedagogy-AI is becoming an essential tool in the classroom, allowing for personalized learning experiences and new forms of creative expression.
Teaching AI Tools--Students must develop a strong understanding of AI technologies, such as large language models and generative AI, to succeed in an increasingly AI-driven world. Teaching communication technology, multilingual AI, and algorithmic bias helps prepare students to navigate AI's complexities across industries.

Using AI to Conduct Research-AI has become a powerful tool for conducting research, particularly in social sciences, communication, and public policy. Researchers use AI to analyze vast datasets, investigate human decision-making processes, and explore how emerging digital media and AI systems shape society.

Examining How AI is Changing the Liberal Arts-AI is reshaping the very fields we study, transforming empathy, communication, and creativity. Broader discussions on AI futures, automation, and agency will push scholars to examine how technology redefines prosperity, power, and human agency.

Ethics and Impact of AI-The ethical and societal impact of AI is at the forefront of its adoption, raising critical questions about bias, privacy, and regulation. AI ethics touches on public trust, the potential for algorithmic discrimination, and the need for ethical AI regulation to protect individuals and communities. As AI continues to shape human decision-making and public policy, understanding its philosophical and societal implications is crucial for navigating the evolving technological landscape.

The committee is especially interested in research that develops new, expansive, and creative approaches to understanding, using, and interpreting ML, AI and emerging technologies within the mission of the college, and in candidates. Candidates whose scholarship encourages valuable critical debate around AI and emerging technologies are highly encouraged.Sample areas of research and teaching may include, but are not limited to:

  • AI at Work
  • AI Ethics
  • AI in Campaigns, Elections, and Policymaking
  • Digital Media and Emerging Communication Technologies

  • AI in the Visual Arts
  • AI in the Performing Arts
  • AI-First Creative Works
  • Large Language Models and Generative AI

The successful candidate will contribute to the research and teaching goals of their home department as well as working in an interdisciplinary way-collaboratively researching, authoring, teaching and presenting across disciplines both within the College and across campus. Additionally, the candidate will be a leader dedicated to fostering a research and teaching environment that advances AI and emerging technologies across the College of Liberal Arts.
