Job Summary:

The College of Liberal Arts at the University of Texas at Arlington invites applications for an Assistant Professor (Tenure Track) specializing in Health and Society. The position is open to applicants in the arts, humanities, or social sciences. The eventual hire will have a home department in the College of Liberal Arts that is determined by their primary disciplinary area, in which they are expected to have an active program of scholarship or creative work.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

We seek an innovative scholar whose research focuses on health and society. Example areas of specialization include, but are not limited to, biomedical ethics, cultural conceptions of illness and health, disability studies, global health and health justice, medical anthropology, and the social determinants of health.

We are especially seeking candidates who demonstrate strong potential for interdisciplinary collaboration, program development, and community engagement, and who can build on existing strengths across the College and University. Successful candidates may collaborate with established interdisciplinary programs within the college, such as ASL and Deaf Studies, Disability Studies, and Medical Humanities and Bioethics.

As a part of their responsibilities, the eventual hire will

  • Develop and teach courses on topics related to health and society;
  • Maintain an active and interdisciplinary research program and build a strong record of academic output (e.g., peer-reviewed articles and presentations at national or international conferences); and
  • Participate in service within the Department, College, University, and the broader academic community.

Required Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. or other terminal degree in Anthropology, Communication, Criminology and Criminal Justice, Philosophy, Political Science, Sociology, or a closely related field by the time of appointment (September 1, 2025).
  • The demonstrated ability to engage in interdisciplinary research contributing to the understanding of health and society. The candidate should have a record of, or demonstrated potential for, successful research and publication.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to teach courses and develop cross-disciplinary initiatives, programs, and curricula.

  • A record of, or demonstrated potential for, publishing in top-tier journals or academic presses.

  • Demonstrated excellence, or clear evidence of potential for excellence, in teaching and mentorship.
Department Information:

The mission of the College of Liberal Arts is to provide a learning community wherein students are provided both broad-based and specialized education and to vitalize the educational process by creating and transmitting knowledge through research, scholarship and creative activity. The College of Liberal Arts offers programs of study in 12 academic units: Art and Art History, Communication, Criminology and Criminal Justice, English, History and Geography, Linguistics and TESOL, Modern Languages, Music, Philosophy and Humanities, Political Science, Sociology and Anthropology, and Theatre Arts and Dance.
