Purpose of Position

The Department of Music at the University of North Dakota is seeking a full-time, benefitted, 9-month tenure-track faculty at the rank of Assistant Professor to serve as the Director of Choral Activities. The position begins August 16, 2025 and is contingent upon availability of funding.

The mission of the University of North Dakota Department of Music is to inspire our students and community through education, performance, scholarship, and human relationships in music. The professional and liberal arts degrees of the Department of Music provide rigorous courses of study that cultivate the highest degree of artistry, innovative teaching, professionalism, and critical inquiry at the undergraduate, master's, and doctoral levels. UND's six choirs include mixed, treble, and low-voice ensembles, with select and non-auditioned options both large and small. All of the ensembles combine music majors and singers from diverse majors from across the UND community. The choirs feature prominently in an annual VIP and family Winter WUNDerland concerts; the UND Honor Festival for Choir, Band, and Strings; celebration of Women in Music; and semester concerts for each group. Special opportunities include regional, national, and international tours; masterworks concerts; recordings; and special UND events and celebrations. Singers at UND have regular courses with two full time choral directors, two full time voice professors, collaborative piano faculty, and numerous adjunct and guest artists with expertise across the spectrum of choral and vocal music. The University of North Dakota is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Music.

Duties & Responsibilities

The successful candidate will receive a contract that allocates 60% effort to instruction of Choral Literature the direction of:

  • Concert Choir (mixed voices)
  • Varsity Bands (tenor-bass choir)
  • Goliards (tenor-bass chamber choir)
  • Acapella Chamber Choir (mixed voices)

The successful candidate will receive 30% allocation for research/creative activity and 10% service allocation for assisting in coordination of the UND Honor Band, Choir, and Strings Festival, the UND Winter WUNDerland VIP Concert, and participation in faculty meetings. All faculty are expected to contribute service within the department, college, university, and community and to participate in the department's recruitment and outreach initiatives. Required Competencies
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including evidence of the ability to teach,
    inspire, and mentor students
  • Effective interpersonal skills, including the ability to collaborate effectively with faculty,
    staff, and students
  • Ability to work with and engage diverse students and colleagues within and outside the
    Department of Music
  • Ability to adapt to current methods of teaching, including online delivery
Minimum Requirements
  • DMA or Ph.D. in Music completed by August 15, 2025.
  • Successful completion of criminal history records check.

Preferred Qualifications
  • 3 Years post-secondary conducting experience
  • 3-5 years K-12 vocal music teaching experience
  • Experience in recruiting
  • Experience in diverse programming
  • Experience in musical collaboration within the community
  • Participation in professional music organizations
