The University of Miami/UHealth Department of SCCC has an exciting opportunity for a Full Time Asst. Scientist to work at UHealth Medical Campus in Miami, FL 33136.

CORE JOB SUMMARY
The Assistant Scientist, SOM (A) carries out a particular research agenda in support of the University's research goals and objectives. Moreover, the Assistant Scientist, SOM (A) contributes to the scientific community by publishing research findings and promotes the University's reputation as a leader in the field

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS
1. Contributes to basic and applied research activities and authors scientific publications, technical and
agency reports, and patent preparations.
2. Collaborates with senior staff to publish findings in refereed journals.
3. Creates and conducts experiments and analyzes results.
4. Works with other researchers to use and develop end products.
5. Writes extramural proposals with approval from appropriate senior staff.
6. Provides ready access to all experimental data for managing staff.
7. Requests or acquires equipment and supplies for assigned project(s).
8. Uses the Internet, surveys, legal documents, and other available sources to collect information.
9. Applies for grants to continue research and prepares materials for submission to granting agencies and
foundations.
10. Adheres to University and unit‐level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

DEPARTMENT SPECIFICS:

This Asst. Scientist position will work closely with Dr. Markus Bredel, Professor and Chair, Department of Radiation Oncology. Dr. Bredel's research focuses on studies of a group of brain tumors called diffused gliomas. Dr. Bredel is a central nervous system tumor expert with a particular interest in advanced radiosurgery for brain metastases and movement disorders.

Translational Research Champion
A Research Project Grant (R01)-funded physician-scientist, Dr. Bredel has been a key player in O'Neal's translational research success. His nationally acclaimed work has contributed greatly to the understanding of brain tumor genetics, with a particular focus on human gliomas.
He served as the Billy Grey Chair of Research of the National Brain Tumor Society. The principal investigator on high-impact studies published in esteemed journals, including The New England Journal of Medicine, the Journal of the American Medical Association, The Lancet Oncology, The Journal of Clinical Investigation and the Journal of Clinical Oncology, his research team's characterization of a novel tumor suppressor gene in brain cancer was named one of the top clinical cancer research advances of the year by the American Society of Clinical Oncology.
Dr. Bredel is a member of The Lancet Oncology editorial board and associate editor of three peer-reviewed scientific journals. He chaired the Central Nervous System Tumors Program Subcommittee of the American Society of Clinical Oncology. As a member of the NRG Oncology Brain Tumor Working Group, he has profiled glioma study patient samples for prognostic and predictive biomarkers.


Central Nervous System Tumor Expertise
In addition to fractionated external beam radiation therapy, including proton beam therapy and adaptive radiation therapy, Dr. Bredel performs a large number of radiosurgery procedures for brain and spine tumors and developed UAB's advanced stereotactic radiosurgery program for movement disorders. The Food and Drug Administration's 510(K) approval of the Varian TrueBeam/Edge radiosurgery platform for the treatment of essential tremor stemmed from a clinical trial for which he was principal investigator. Dr. Bredel also performed the world's first frameless radiosurgical pallidotomy for dystonia.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Ph.D., M.D. or other doctoral level degree required

Experience:
Minimum 1 year of relevant experience
