Summary of the Group

The Flow Cytometry group is part of Dynamic Omics/ Centre for Genomics Research (CGR) and Discovery Sciences within AstraZeneca, and works across all therapeutic areas: Oncology, Cardiovascular, Renal and Metabolism (CVRM), Respiratory and Immunology (R&I), Vaccines and Immunotherapies (V&I), Neurosciences, and Rare Diseases. The team supports over 500 scientists globally and delivers key data to projects across all phases of the drug discovery and development, and we work with all modalities from small molecules to biologics. The Flow Cytometry Center of Excellence is among the leading flow cytometry organizations worldwide (as recently recognized by the International Society for Advancement of Cytometry), equipped with state-of-the-art instrumentation and ground breaking technology and expertise.

What you'll do

In this role, you will supervise the operations of the team in Gaithersburg and lead collaborations with multiple therapeutic areas. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work and grow in a fast-paced environment under the supervision of senior staff members.

  • Oversee the flow cytometry team in Gaithersburg to ensure proper maintenance of the instruments, operations, and training of the new hires.
  • Manage the flow cytometry workflows from experimental design to data analysis of pre-clinical and clinical studies in alignment with the global flow cytometry leadership
  • Establish and maintain relationship with stakeholders to identify development opportunities and align operations with therapeutic areas' needs. Prioritize projects collaborations aligned with AstraZeneca pipeline.
  • Supervise the collaborative efforts with multiple therapeutic areas focusing on innovative immunology/flow cytometry projects and/or automation solutions
  • Summarize data for presentations, reports, and publications with accountability for accuracy. Review and approve flow cytometry data and reports to ensure quality and integrity
  • Demonstrate broad understanding of current and emerging technologies in cellular analyses, with a keen perspective of how novel approaches might fit across each of the supported Therapeutic Areas
  • Demonstrate excellent leadership skills and collaborative and pro-active problem-solving skills to include identifying a problem and taking appropriate actions and knowing when to seek guidance
  • Influence through initiatives, presentations, publications, governing bodies and consortium activities
  • Ensure that work is conducted in a safe and compliant manner; maintain lab documentation, establish SOPs and/or practice in accordance with established SOPs, GLP requirements

Education & Experience Requirements:

Education: MS degree or PhD in Immunology, Bioinformatics, Engineering or a related field

Experience: MS degree and 8+ years of related experience or a PhD degree and 5+ years of related experience

Required Skills & Experience:
  • Experience leading PhD level scientists with significant hands-on experience to operate, maintain, and troubleshoot flow cytometer instrumentations (BD Biosciences, Cytek and Beckman platforms) and cell sorter (BB Biosciences platforms), following best industry practices
  • Lead collaborations and advance projects by standardizing the design of experiments, analysis and interpretation of data from of our preclinical and clinical studies, and summary of experimental results for presentations, review for accuracy and write reports and high-quality/high impact scientific publications
  • Experience with a variety of flow cytometry data analysis and bioinformatic tools, including FlowJo, FCS Express and Omics and/or programming with Python or R
  • Strong multi-tasking, time management, organizational skills and excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Proven ability to lead by example with honesty, integrity, flexibility, creativity, and collaborative spirit thereby building successful teams
  • Ability to handle multiple projects and/or tasks in a fast-paced environment

Desired Skills & Experience
  • Experience with multiomics integration and working with data scientists creating data analysis platforms
  • Extensive experience with setting goals and objectives, motivating and developing scientists and influencing recruitment of successful teams
  • Experience with establishing automated lab processes
  • Experience with Imaging flow and/or microscopy experience
