Department Information

The Office of Corporate and Foundation Relations within IU Research at Indiana University is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Foundation Relations Officer to manage some of Indiana University's most important relationships with private foundations.

Job Summary

This Foundation Relations Officer will be responsible for working with faculty, academic leadership, development officers and collaborating offices including Proposal Development Services, Office of Research Administration, and IU Foundation to pursue funding opportunities from a portfolio of strategic partners. The position reports to the Executive Director for Corporate and Foundation Relations.

Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Collaborates with university leaders, faculty members, development colleagues, and other internal stakeholders to pursue funding opportunities from a portfolio of strategic partners.
  • Identifies funding priorities, develop strategies to cultivate and request funding, draft and revise proposals, and ensure compliance with internal procedures.
  • Collaborates with university leaders and IU Research colleagues to identify existing research strengths and growth opportunities.
  • Connects with faculty members, research deans, and others to learn about research interests and discuss funding strategies.
  • Collaborates with PIs, Office of Research Administration, the President's Office, and other internal stakeholders to draft and finalize grant reports.
  • Communicates with funders to share impact and facilitate connections with PIs and/or university leadership.
  • Cultivates, solicits and stewards gifts, grants, and contracts from foundations on behalf of Indiana University.
  • Creates tailored proposals to raise significant foundation support for Indiana University
  • Executes strategy for top foundation prospects in close collaboration with the Executive Director, planning and implementing plans to engage major foundation funders, staffing administrative and academic leaders, and finalizing grant agreements
  • Supports faculty development by distributing funding opportunities, meets with faculty across the university, and works with research offices to plan and develop programs designed to increase support for research from foundations
  • Visits regularly with local, regional, and national foundations, providing timely, consistent follow-up with requests for information and answers to inquiries
  • Establishes and implements procedures necessary for acknowledging foundation pledges, pledge payments and gifts in consultation with units and schools.
  • Researches and analyzes national and geographic data to identify foundation prospects by gathering and utilizing prospect information to prioritize foundation support and requesting prospect assignments.
  • Stays abreast of current industry literature as it applies to these areas; research, identify and demonstrate how new approaches can be successfully incorporated and applied.
  • Attends professional development conferences.
General Responsibilities
  • Identifies new prospects, cultivates relationships, and manages a portfolio and/or region of donors building a pipeline for solicitation.
  • Executes plans and designs campaigns to sustain and increase donations.
  • Collaborates with development colleagues university-wide to align prospects/donors' interests with university funding needs and opportunities.
  • Maintains meaningful and consistent contact with potential donors to communicate university goals and solicit their support.
  • Introduces campus/school fundraisers to appropriate gift prospects for cultivation.
  • Documents communications, analyzes data, evaluates success and makes recommendations for change to campaign strategy.

Combinations of related education and experience may be considered. Education beyond the minimum required may be substituted for work experience. Work experience beyond the minimum required may be substituted for education.

EDUCATION

Required
  • Bachelor's degree in related field
Preferred
  • Master's degree
WORK EXPERIENCE

Required
  • 2 years of experience in fundraising/development, sales, communications, public relations, a higher education foundation, or related field

Working Conditions / Demands

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
