JOB SUMMARY:The Associate General Counsel is responsible for providing legal advice and services to the University across a diverse range of practice areas related to higher education. Primary areas of legal work will vary with demand. This position functions as a generalist, providing services in a variety of subject areas, including employment, contracts, student issues, governance, constitutional law, civil rights, policy development and review, open records, law enforcement, litigation, athletics, construction, real estate, intellectual property, information technology, information security, and ethics/conflicts of interest.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:Associate General Counsel works with minimal supervision and is expected to handle legal issues and questions of substantial complexity, sensitivity and have knowledge and skill on legal matters, as well as areas and issues impacting or affecting the University. The employee is expected to be skilled, experienced and capable of independently representing the University as determined by the General Counsel.

Essential Duties Summary:

  • Furnish legal advice on general and specialized legal issues related to higher education and the University.
  • Performs legal research and prepares memorandums/opinions on legal issues.
  • Prepare, review, revise, and interpret Manual of Administrative Policies and Procedures to comply with applicable laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Draft and review contracts for internal stakeholders. If necessary, collaborate with internal stakeholders to assist in contract negotiations.
  • Process subpoenas and requests for information under the Texas Public Information Act.
  • Represent the University in proceedings, hearings, and investigations involving federal/state administrative agencies and faculty disciplinary matters.
  • Manage and support litigation cases handled by the Texas Attorney General's Office.
  • Support the University's top priorities and perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Hiring Range:

$97,093.00 - $121,367.00

Education:

Graduation from an ABA accredited law school with a Juris Doctor degree.

An excellent academic record and related experience preferred.

Required Licensing/Certification:

License to practice law in Texas and in good standing with no prior disciplinary record.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of:

  • Knowledge of contract drafting.
  • Employment law, due process, and litigation (discovery and management).
  • Experience with legal issues.
  • Applicable Texas laws (e.g., procurement) related to Texas state universities and institutions of higher education.
  • Compliance policies, procedures, and implementation.

Skill in:
  • Outstanding communication, interpersonal, and leadership.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management.
  • Effective negotiation and vendor management.
  • Proactive problem solver.
  • Attention to details.

Ability to:
  • Work independently and with other attorneys and staff.
  • Sound judgment and high degree of professionalism and integrity.
Work Experience:

Requires a minimum of seven (7) years as a licensed attorney with experience in contracts, employment law, constitutional law, and litigation.

Experience in contract drafting and employment laws preferred.

Working/Environmental Conditions:

  • Routine office environment.
  • Sitting or standing in one location much of the time.
  • Walking campus.
  • Some stooping, lifting or carrying objects light weight may be required.
  • Use of video display terminal.
