Position Purpose:

On both a scheduled work order basis and in response to emergencies, performs maintenance and repair to Dartmouth College academic and administration buildings, structures, and related fixtures and utilities, using a variety of trade practices associated with carpentry, painting and related trades. Works independently, or under general supervision.

The Building Repair Technician II is an intermediate level position. The Building Repair Tech II will develop a specified level of skill and proficiency in the execution of duties related to general maintenance and repair at Dartmouth College.

Required Qualifications - Education and Yrs Exp:

3+ years of experience

Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Two- to six years of relevant experience in carpentry, painting and related trades.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to be qualified under the terms of the Dartmouth College Driver Safety and Motor Vehicle policy.
  • Mechanically inclined, able to measure and cut material to specified dimensions.
  • Ability to read and understand building plans and sketches.
  • Ability to use a variety of hand tools including screwdrivers, pliers, hammer, wrenches, socket wrenches, tape measures, level.
  • Ability to use a variety of power tools including but not limited to drills, hammer drill, saws, sanders, planer.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions and work independently under minimal supervision, exercising sound judgment and applying strong problem-solving skills.
  • Strong customer service skills and good communications skills; ability to communicate work to be performed with college employees and building occupants.
  • Elementary computer skills including basic word processing, email, spreadsheets, smartphones or tablets.
  • Ability to document and record issues and procedures.
  • Ability to perform demanding physical activity, work at heights and perform tasks requiring manual dexterity under physically difficult and/or strenuous conditions.
  • Must be capable of participating in the College's respiratory protection program and capable of responding to alarms including potentially hazardous environments.
  • Willingness to work overtime when required.

Must have successfully completed the following training prior to performing work to which the training relates:
  • Driver Safety- Electrical Safety related work practices
  • Lock-out/tag-out
  • Respirator training
  • Fall Protection
  • Working in confined spaces
  • Laboratory safety/hazardous waste management training
  • Asbestos awareness training
  • Bloodborne pathogen training
  • EPA R.R.P. Lead Training

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Skill with shop mathematics, able to measure and cut material to specified dimensions.

Description:

Responsibilities

  • Core responsibilities include: request work orders, advise supervisor of materials/services required for repairs, assist senior trades (carpenters, building repair technicians, building service technicians) in project/repair work to further knowledge.
  • Communicates directly and respectfully with building occupants, who may be inconvenienced or affected by scheduled work.
  • Performs general carpentry tasks such as: repairs shades and blinds; installs simple shelving and white boards; installs or repairs rest-room accessories; makes minor adjustments to doors and door hardware; modular furniture repair, including removal and installation. Applies caulking for sealing purposes.
  • Performs painting repairs and maintenance. For example: repairs surfaces using putty, plaster, joint compound or other appropriate method; selects pre-mixed paints and stains; prepares products per manufacturer's instructions; applies products using brushes, rollers, spray or other appropriate method, cleans brushes, rollers, spray equipment, and other equipment, safely disposes of used paints and rags.
  • Repairs drywall by selectively removing damaged wall and patching. Install drywall under instructions. Finishes drywall to a level 4 as defined by the Gypsum Association (GA-214); protects surrounding areas.
  • Grouts and seals tile.
  • Assist campus Roofer with roof repairs.
  • Operates a motor vehicle to pick up supplies required for the maintenance of properties located throughout Hanover and surrounding area.

Learns from senior technicians via working with and understanding procedures:

  • For example, receives clear and concise instructions from senior technicians; learns via constructive input from coworkers performing work.
  • While performing maintenance and repair work, learns the procedures being taken and the reasoning behind the action.
  • Develops skills by observing and assisting peers and senior members of the Building Repair Shop in performing response, problem diagnosis and repair.

Mentorship

  • Works with and mentors Building Repair Technician I, explaining the procedures being performed and the reasoning behind those actions. When qualified, allows the tech to perform the work under supervision.

  • Works from ladders, scaffolds, lifts, and platforms.
  • Work requires bending, keeling, standing, climbing, and working in stretched, cramped or awkward positions.
  • Work involves regular lifting, carrying, or holding objects weighing from up to 80 pounds.
  • Work is performed: indoors; outdoors; in harsh weather; in areas that are dirty, or smoky and where fumes are present, in underground manholes.
  • Is exposed to cuts and bruises and more serious injuries working on ladders, scaffolds, etc.
  • Work involves wearing special or protective clothing such as aprons or overalls; gloves; goggles; and ear plugs.
