Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit:

Established in 1936, Dramatic Art is the second oldest theatre department in the country. Our faculty members are both scholars and artists, teachers and practitioners, constantly moving back and forth between the classroom and the theatre. PlayMakers Repertory Company (LORT D theatre) is embedded within the Department and the symbiotic relationship, between the Department of Dramatic Art and PlayMakers Repertory Company, builds upon a more than one-hundred-year legacy. The Joan H. Gillings Center for Dramatic Art is the crucible where students transform learning into practice every day. Our mission is to educate students to think critically and write cogently about the creative and artistic processes of theatre, its literature, and its history.

Position Summary:

The Director of Business Administration has direct responsibility for implementing, assessing, and evaluating the management policies and practices necessary for successfully carrying out the Department of Dramatic Art's mission in teaching, research, public, and university service. This leadership position has an independent and broad scope of responsibility within a complex unit.

The Director of Business Administration reports directly to the Department Chair and oversees all functions related to financial matters, staff and faculty personnel, business operations and functions, and policies and procedures. This position collaborates with the Chair on short and long-term strategic planning for the department's continued growth. Management of the department's financial resources includes the annual allocation of operational funding, program funding for the Kenan Theatre Company and Ground Floor Productions, evaluation of financial needs and establishing budgets, preparing reports and projections, and providing short and long-term financial planning for state, trust, contracts and grants, F&A, gift, revenue funds and the shared funding allocations for PlayMakers Repertory Company. The position also oversees all personnel activities related to recruitment, EHRA faculty (appointments, reappointments, promotion, and tenure), SHRA staff (permanent and temporary), student employees, and international hires.

While the Department of Dramatic Art is the Director of Business Administration's primary focus, PlayMakers Repertory Company is embedded within the Department and this relationship creates a unique unit where academics and the professional theater come together. Many aspects of the unit are interconnected. The faculty in the Department of Dramatic Art is comprised of scholars, artists, teachers, and practitioners. As such, all faculty in Dramatic Art serve in some capacity as designers, artists, or technicians with PlayMakers or the Kenan Theatre Company and Dramatic Art graduate students train in a professional theater setting, which is an integral part of the Department's teaching mission. The Director of Business Administration must foster a collaborative relationship and work towards the success of the entire Unit. In partnership with the Chair, this position establishes and executes priorities to ensure the Unit's mission is achieved.
