Position Summary

The Campus Safety Officer position is assigned to Patrol Operations within Campus Safety. Campus Safety Officers are the primary safety and security personnel for the University. Their duties include, but are not limited to, patrol of the campus and its buildings and assisting the campus community with a wide variety of problems and concerns. We will be filling multiple positions from this posting.

Essential Functions

  • Patrols assigned areas, physically inspecting buildings and checking doors, windows, entries and exits for safety.
  • Responds to fire alarms.
  • Communicates with and assists fire, police Divisions and other public safety entities.
  • Provides initial response to emergencies and criminal incidents on University property; completes initial investigations to determine disposition.
  • Provides general assistance to the campus community and visitors.
  • Apprehends violators of city, state and federal laws and regulations that may have occurred on or involved university property.
  • Operates University patrol vehicles and radio equipment as assigned.
  • Completes written reports and maintains logs relating to activity on campus.
  • Assigned to duties as the Division dispatcher, to include handling incoming calls for service, monitoring fire and intrusion alarms, dispatching other officers to calls for service and monitoring CCTV systems for locations on campus.
  • Adheres to all Division and University policies, procedures, directives, rules and regulations.
  • Participates in the interview panel during the Divisions selection and hiring process when requested by Senior Management.
  • Participates in the Divisions recruitment and accreditation efforts.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Possesses strong oral and written communication skills to include basic computer and typing proficiency.
  • Ability to deliver and follow detailed instructions.
  • Ability to accept and successfully complete specialized training.
  • Thorough knowledge of simple set-up, adjustment, and operational procedures of work-related equipment.
  • Capable of facilitating the interactions of diverse needs of a complex organization.
Required Qualifications
  • Must be at least 21 years of age at the time of hiring.
  • Must possess a High School diploma or GED.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Colorado drivers license and be insurable under University guidelines; or, obtain a valid Colorado drivers license within the required time frame.
  • Must successfully pass a written job related skills examination.
  • Must pass a complete background check to include criminal, motor vehicle report and verification of employment and education.
  • Must pass a pre-employment physical, drug screen and human performance evaluation administered by a University approved physician.
Employment Requirements Post Hire
  • Must have the ability to obtain or possess a City and County of Denver Security Guard License within 3 weeks of hire.
  • Must successfully complete initial certification in Basic First Aid/CPR/AED, Defensive Driving, and TPR (Threat Pattern Recognition) Use of Force Basic within 3 weeks of hire.
  • Must successfully maintain re-certifications in Basic First Aid/CPR/AED and TPR to ensure the maintenance of job related skills.
  • Must successfully complete an annual physical assessment test as part of TPR re-certification to ensure the maintenance of job related physical fitness standards.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate's degree or equivalent credit hours with an emphasis in Criminal Justice, Police Science, or Security Management; or 6+ months related law enforcement/Campus Safety experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Working Environment

As field-based personnel, Campus Safety Officers routinely work outside in all weather conditions. This position may be assigned to any shift or combination of shifts as is deemed necessary by the Captain/Sergeant or members of the Divisions senior management group. Campus Safety Officers are considered essential personnel and may be called upon to work additional hours to cover shifts or provide special event coverage.

Physical Activities

It is the policy of the Division of Campus Safety (DCS) that all DCS personnel required to have a City and County of Denver issued Security Guard License for their position must successfully pass a job related human performance evaluation as part of a conditional offer of employment. The human performance evaluation shall be administered by an approved University of Denver medical provider and will consist of an evaluation of the following:

Lift/Carry: Transfer traffic cones to/from are of need (10lbs) Distance: 5
Carry: Transfer fire extinguisher from wall cabinet to are of need (15lbs) 1x in 5 min
Lift/Carry: Transfer traffic barricades to/from storage area, patrol vehicle, area of need (27lbs) Distance 10
Push/Pull: Open/Close parking lot roll gates; must open building doors (15lbs) 1x in 5 min
Push/Pull: Drag incapacitated person out of harms way; (65 lbs.) 1x in 5 min
Climb: Must access 10th floor of campus interior structure during emergency calls when elevators are locked out; must patrol stairways; must pass performance related test (60 steps in under 5 min)
Climb: Must access rooftop hatches, rooftop of parking lot. 17 x in under 5 min. (Ladder)
Dynamic Posture: Must respond to first aid/medical assist calls, perform CPR. Forward bend to reach a point (1 from floor) 1 x 5 min

Specific vision abilities required by this job include correction to 20/30 vision, close vision, distance vision, night vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Must also possess the ability to hear, for safety reasons inherent to the essential functions of the job. Must maintain fitness standards to ensure the ability to physically apprehend and detain suspects, provide emergency and protective services, and conduct other physically demanding assignments. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, and run, climb stairs and must routinely lift and/or move 50 pounds. During emergencies this position may be required to move incapacitated individuals away from dangerous circumstances.

Work Schedule

Non-exempt position; 40-hour week. Varied hours during a 24/7 work week. Campus Safety Officers assigned to Patrol Operations participate in a seniority-based shift bid and may be required to work nights, weekends, and holidays.

The salary grade for the position is 6.

Hourly Range
The hourly rate for the position is $25.00.
