The Department of Chemistry at Colby College invites applications for a David Lee Phillips Postdoctoral Fellow position in Physical Organic Chemistry. This is a temporary one-year position with the possibility of renewal for a second year, subject to satisfactory performance and availability of funds.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Synthesize, purify, and characterize organic compounds; perform mechanistic studies and calculations; attend group meetings; mentor undergraduates in the Thamattoor laboratory; write manuscripts for publications; present research at conferences; and oversee day-to-day laboratory activities.

QUALIFICATIONS

We welcome applications from candidates with research interests in experimental and theoretical physical organic chemistry. Preference will be given to applicants with expertise in organic synthesis, computational chemistry, spectroscopy, photochemistry, and mechanistic studies. Experience with time-resolved laser flash photolysis methods is desirable. In addition to carrying out faculty-mentored research, the successful candidate may have an opportunity to teach up to one undergraduate course per semester (with or without a laboratory component) selected from: Introductory General Chemistry, Introductory Organic Chemistry, Advanced Organic Chemistry, and/or a January term course on a mutually acceptable topic. Candidates must have a Ph.D. by the start date and a strong commitment to undergraduate education.

The position is supported by a competitive compensation package, excellent instrumentation and laboratory facilities, and strong computational resources.

KEY RELATIONSHIPS:

Reporting to Dasan M. Thamattoor, the J. Warren Merrill Professor in Chemistry and Natural History, this position interacts with students, faculty, staff and outside constituents.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

General open office, laboratory, and campus environment. Position involves sitting, although frequent movement is necessary. Working with photochemical equipment, and pyrophoric reagents such as alkyllithiums, Grignards, etc. may be required. Computer usage involving repetitive hand/wrist motion is also necessary.
