Summary of Role
The Director of Toxicology and Industrial Hygiene is accountable for driving results in a fast-paced environment by evaluating toxicology data and potential industrial hygiene exposure sources, assessing risk, and recommending and implementing controls for physical, chemical, and biological hazard containment. The role supports operations, maintenance, and laboratory staff by developing and implementing health & safety programs and procedures to manage risk to personnel and patients effectively. The Director, Toxicology and Industrial Hygiene, is also a key leader and influencer of safe behaviors and practices at Sterling, leveraging their knowledge to support the Sterling Network in best practice implementation and hazard evaluation. The position requires superior leadership behaviors of the Sterling core competencies and non-negotiables and expertise in functional competencies included in this position profile.

Your Responsibilities

  • Develops and maintains Chemical Exposure Management and Industrial Hygiene Programs for the facility.
  • Support best practice evaluation and implementation within the Sterling network by working directly with EH&S personnel across sites.
  • Leads and participates in the development and implementation of supporting programs such as respiratory protection, personal protective equipment, hazard analysis and control, hazard communication, hearing conservation and ergonomics.
  • Assesses new and existing products for toxicology to help establish target Occupational Exposure Limits for the purposes of developing strong containment strategies as well as Permissible Daily Exposure limits in support of cleaning and cross contamination controls.
  • Serves as a key subject matter expert in toxicology in support of QSAR and M7 assessments in support of CMC strategy development. Also acts as a key customer liaison on the topic of exposure limits and toxicology data assessment, including peer to peer interactions with fellow toxicologists to ensure organizational alignment.
  • Support both US and UK Regulatory Compliance teams on global hazard communication and safety data sheet systems.
  • Maintains an up to date understanding of industry best practices and new developments in containment technology, facility design, and approaches to handling of hazardous materials.
  • Conducts routine and follow up industrial hygiene surveys, prepares reports, recommends improvements and communicates findings to leadership.
  • May coordinate contractor/consultant activities related to containment performance testing and development of containment solutions.
Requirements for the Role
  • Bachelor's degree in a life sciences discipline or EH&S related discipline with minimum 10 years of experience in a pharmaceutical or chemical manufacturing environment.
  • Certified Industrial Hygienist certification required.
  • Advanced degree (PhD, MD, MSc) in Toxicology or related discipline required.
  • Certification and / or Degree in Toxicology (DABT) highly preferred.
