Best Buddies International is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to establishing a global volunteer movement that creates opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment, leadership development, and inclusive living for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).

Best Buddies is the world's largest organization dedicated to ending the social, physical and economic isolation of the 200 million people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Our programs empower the special abilities of people with IDD by helping them form meaningful friendships with their peers, secure successful jobs, live independently, improve public speaking, self-advocacy, and communication skills, and feel valued by society.

Job Title: Intern, Programs and Community Engagement

Department: State Operations and Programs

Reports to: Lead, Program Manager

# of direct reports: 0

Salary Range: Unpaid, 10-15 per week

Position Overview:

The Intern, Programs and Community Engagement, will work with the Best Buddies Delaware Program Manager to engage our volunteers and the community in the mission of Best Buddies, specifically the Friendship and Leadership pillars. This position will assist with planning and executing trainings and events, furthering our efforts to expand our programs to new schools, and managing and expanding our Citizens program into new communities. This role aims to assist in delivering quality Best Buddies school and community programs.

Job Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in college or 2 years' experience working in nonprofit or relevant field
  • Comfortable engaging with people with IDD
  • Impeccable oral and written communication skills
  • Experience with major social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, etc.
  • Basic project and time management skills
  • Exhibit strong initiative, drive for results, and self-assessment skills
  • The ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Must be comfortable working with youth and adults
  • Available to work 10-15 hours per week during business hours for 8 weeks (hours and length of internship can be discussed to meet any specific requirements necessary)
  • Available to participate in-person in trainings and meetings in the Wilmington/Newark area

Job Duties include, but are not limited to:

Programs
  • Assist in developing and executing events, including social events for Adult Citizens Program
  • Assist in managing state friendship program Salesforce database
  • Assist in planning Fall semester events calendar, prep materials
  • Assist with revamping expansion materials (i.e., welcome packet, info materials, etc.)
  • Work with Program Manager to onboard new Citizens Participants, including conducting participant interviews and working to create new buddy pairs (matching participants with and without IDD in one-to-one matches)
  • Assist in new school recruitment
  • Asist in planning community events and engagements for participants

Development
  • Assist participants with fundraising efforts during our Champion of the Year Gala season
