Position Overview

We are seeking a highly motivated Laboratory Assistant to join our team of laboratory professionals. This position is ideal for individuals who are eager to launch their careers in a fast-paced, cutting-edge laboratory environment. The successful candidate will assist in the preparation, processing, and analysis of diagnostic samples in support of high-volume testing operations.

As a Laboratory Assistant, you will work closely with lab technicians and supervisors, helping to ensure the efficient processing of diagnostic samples while maintaining strict adherence to quality control standards and safety protocols. This role offers an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience and develop technical skills within the field of laboratory diagnostics.

Key Responsibilities

  • Sample Handling and Processing:
    • Assist in the receipt, labeling, and preparation of diagnostic samples for analysis.
    • Ensure proper sample storage and maintain accurate records of sample tracking and chain of custody.
    • Prepare reagents, consumables, and laboratory supplies as needed for sample testing.
  • Laboratory Support:
    • Provide general support to laboratory technicians by maintaining lab cleanliness, organization, and stock of consumables and supplies.
    • Assist in the routine maintenance of laboratory equipment, ensuring that instruments are calibrated and functioning properly.
    • Support technicians in conducting high-throughput assays by preparing samples, reagents, and equipment for testing.
  • Quality Control and Documentation:
    • Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) to ensure that all laboratory processes meet required quality standards.
    • Accurately document test results, equipment maintenance, and any deviations from procedures.
    • Assist in maintaining laboratory records and preparing reports as needed.
  • High-Throughput Testing Support:
    • Support high-throughput diagnostic testing by preparing samples and reagents for automated platforms.
    • Help monitor and track test throughput to ensure that sample processing stays on schedule.
    • Assist with performing basic laboratory tests and processing large volumes of diagnostic samples under supervision.
  • Lab Safety and Compliance:
    • Adhere to safety protocols and maintain a safe working environment by following all relevant safety regulations, including PPE usage and proper waste disposal.
    • Assist in the preparation for routine laboratory inspections and audits by ensuring proper record-keeping and compliance with lab safety standards.
  • Team Collaboration:
    • Collaborate with other laboratory team members to ensure efficient workflow and troubleshooting of issues as they arise.
    • Communicate effectively with team members and supervisors regarding sample status, test results, and operational concerns.
  • Training and Development:
    • Participate in on-the-job training programs to develop your knowledge of laboratory procedures, diagnostic techniques, and the use of automated systems.
    • Learn to operate laboratory instruments and automated platforms under supervision, with opportunities for increasing responsibility over time.
Qualifications

Education:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry, Biomedical Sciences, or a related field is preferred but not required.
  • Coursework in laboratory techniques, microbiology, or diagnostic testing is a plus.
Experience:
  • No prior laboratory experience required for entry-level candidates, but any internships, volunteer work, or academic projects in a laboratory setting will be considered a plus.
  • Familiarity with basic laboratory techniques such as pipetting, sample preparation, or working with laboratory equipment is a bonus.
Skills:
  • Attention to Detail: Ability to perform tasks accurately and with precision, ensuring quality control standards are met.
  • Organization: Strong organizational skills to manage large volumes of samples, reagents, and laboratory supplies.
  • Basic Laboratory Skills: Understanding of common laboratory procedures such as sample preparation, pipetting, and use of basic lab equipment (e.g., centrifuges, balances).
  • Communication Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills to document results and interact with team members.
  • Adaptability: Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, high-throughput environment while maintaining attention to detail and quality.
  • Team Player: Willingness to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
Preferred Skills (not required):
  • Basic knowledge of automated diagnostic platforms or experience working with high-throughput equipment in a laboratory setting.
  • Familiarity with Lab Information Management Systems (LIMS) or other laboratory software for sample tracking and documentation.
Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to lift and carry laboratory materials weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time and perform tasks that require manual dexterity.
  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment (PPE), such as lab coats, gloves, safety goggles, and face shields, as required by the lab.
Work Environment and Conditions:
  • Location: This position is based in our Diagnostic Laboratory in Louisville, KY.
  • Work Schedule: Full-time position with typical business hours. Some weekend, evening, or holiday shifts may be required depending on operational needs.
  • Laboratory Setting: The work will be conducted in a laboratory environment, requiring adherence to strict safety protocols and the proper handling of biological samples and laboratory reagents.
