Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit:

The American Indian Center (AIC) is classified as a campus-wide Center under the Provost and Executive Vice-Chancellor, through the office of the Vice-Provost for Academic and Community Engagement. On campus, it provides support for teaching, student engagement and research about American Indians and serves as the University's primary means of outreach and service to North Carolina's Native population, which is the largest in the eastern United States, and to other Native communities across the country. The AIC is an important cultural, intellectual, and social site for Native students, faculty and staff and is a valued voice in campus conversations on diversity, inclusion, and scholarship and ensures that American Indian perspectives continue to enrich the learning environment of the entire University.

Position Summary:

The Native Leadership Institute Community Advisor will attend an orientation event at UNC-Chapel Hill, organize and facilitate five listening sessions (three within the state and two out-of-state), participate in monthly virtual check-ins. This endeavor presents a unique opportunity to collaborate with diverse tribal members in order to gain invaluable insights into the shifting needs and priorities of tribal nations. Attending listening sessions will involve some overnight and weekend travel. Community Advisory Board Members will be compensated $6,000 for their contributions and expertise spanning May 2024-December 2025; advisors should expect to devote 10-20 hours per month to the project. This position requires driving and a driving check will be conducted.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Bachelor's degree and one year of experience related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

Demonstrated experience working directly with tribal communities in the state; demonstrated knowledge of current tribal affairs in the state and country; outstanding written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

Previous experience with the Native Leadership Institute as a participant and/or organizer.
