The diverse patient population cared for on this unit includes both medical and surgical patient populations who are typically admitted to the hospital for an estimated 24-48 hour stay. Patient diagnoses frequently treated as medical observation include but are not limited to chest pain, abdominal pain, back pain, and syncope. Surgical recovery patients include a variety of procedures under the care of the following services: orthopedics, urology, plastics, and cardiology, among others. We rely on teamwork to provide high quality and compassionate care as we provide patients the necessary care and education for them to make a safe transition home following their short stay in the hospital.

Key Areas of Responsibilities Include but are not limited to:

  • Hire, develop and manage the performance of staff in an inpatient setting. Responsible for talent management of staff and identify succession plan strategies. Follow and apply leave management policies. Knowledgeable of and implement human resources policies/procedures and provisions in the collective bargaining agreements
  • Prepare budget or assist in development; provide projections and recommendations. Monitor and maintain unit operating budget within specified targets. Analyze variances and create action plans to take corrective action. Understand financial implications of collective bargaining agreements
  • Provide leadership to establish and/or maintain efficient and effective systems to ensure optimal patient outcomes. Identify trends and determine quality initiatives and priorities
  • Allocate resources to meet quality and productivity expectations. Review patient satisfaction data and develop, implement, and evaluate plan(s) to enhance patient satisfaction. Ensure unit is survey ready
  • Develop action plans for the unit that meet health care strategic goals focusing on patient safety/quality, experience, throughput/length of stay, and staff engagement.
  • Monitor/evaluate goal implementation and provide progress reports to nursing leadership
  • Advocate for needs of unit with healthcare leaders. Facilitate multidisciplinary participation in clinical problem solving. Utilize a unit council to identify opportunities for improvement and innovative models of care using a multidisciplinary team to impact patient outcomes
  • Educate and mentor staff in the management of complex patient care issues. Provide clinical education and coaching to develop staff competency and professionalism. Participate in and support education of health care students
  • Encourage staff to participate in evidence-based practice research initiatives and incorporate best practices into unit operations
  • Ability to work with a variety of individuals and groups in a constructive and civil manner while appreciating the unique contribution of individuals from varied cultures, nationalities, genders, ages, etc
  • Ability to utilize existing resources and learning to achieve or exceed desired outcomes of current and future organizational goals/needs. Able to demonstrate ethical behavior in diverse situations while producing results

Schedule: Days, includes unit and divisional on call as needed

Education or Equivalency Required:
  • Master's Degree in Nursing or related field. If Master's Degree is in related field, Baccalaureate in Nursing is required
  • If qualified applicant does not have Master's Degree in Nursing, the applicant will need to complete an advanced degree in nursing, health care administration, or business administration within five years of beginning this position
  • Current license to practice nursing in Iowa or ability to obtain an Iowa license by date of hire is required
Required Qualifications:
  • Recent experience in clinical practice
  • Considerable (3+ years) experience and demonstrated skill in leadership
  • Experience with unit operations including human resources, financial management, quality management, and compliance with regulatory environment with various federal and state agencies and the Joint Commission
  • Demonstrated experience with patient/family satisfaction initiatives including modeling service excellence principles
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to collaborate with physicians, staff, patients, and families
  • Must be proficient in computer software applications
  • Professional job-related experience fostering or promoting a welcoming and respectful work/academic environment where people of all backgrounds and perspectives feel welcomed and appreciated; or demonstrated the ability to do so
Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience working in large academic medical center
  • Experience working in a union environment.
  • Experience working on a short stay/observation unit
  • Certification in a role or specialty through a nationally recognized professional nursing certification body. If not currently certified, must seek certification in a role or specialty as soon as eligible to sit for the exam
