Job Description

Summarized Purpose:

Under the medical direction of the chief physician/investigator and general supervision of the Paramedic Manager, fulfills all of the duties of a Staff Paramedic including oversight, coordination, and continued development of the technical training needs of all paramedic staff in the Phase 1 Clinic. Training may include technical procedures, paramedic continuing education, adverse event documentation and management, and specialized training. Mentors and assesses staff through the normal course of their daily duties. Oversees the department's quality control logs, staff schedules and periodic modifications to the Paramedic Training Manual and Emergency Medical Standing Orders required for subject safety in the clinical environment.

Essential Functions and Other Job Information:

  • Performs any or all Staff Paramedic shiftwork as required •
  • Provides basic and advanced emergent and non-emergent medical care to all study subjects • Monitors and records Adverse Events
  • May act as primary subject safety contact for all study subjects in the Clinic
  • Monitors cardiac telemetry for potentially serious arrhythmia and intervenes as necessary
  • Actively trains, mentors, and assesses the skills of the paramedic staff. Manages staff training status and progression
  • Drafts and manages the semi-monthly scheduling of paramedic personnel
  • Assists Paramedic Manager with oversight of the department
  • Acts as a technical liaison for study-specific paramedic procedures
  • Attends study-specific planning meetings and participates in study-specific cut- sheet development tailored to the Paramedic Department
  • Assists Project Managers, Physicians and study teams in the logistical planning of study conduction workflows

May act independently on determining methods and procedures on new assignments. May be a facilitator and / or team leader (formal or informal).

Contacts are frequent with individuals representing outside organizations, and / or individuals of significant importance within the company. Contacts involve planning and preparation of communications, requiring skill, tact, persuasion and / or negotiation to accomplish the objectives of the communication.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

Associates Degree in a science or health-related field strongly preferred.

Previous experience that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job (comparble to 4 years which should include 3-4 years experience as a paramedic on a 911-ALS unit and/or in a clinical setting). or equivalent combination of education, training, & experience. 2 years clinical research experience preferred and 1-2 years of supervisory/management or teaching experience.

Texas Licensed/Certified EMT-Paramedic Texas Licensed/Certified EMT-Paramedic and current American Heart Association Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification required.

Years of experience refers to typical years of related experience needed to gain the required knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the essential functions of the job. Years of experience are not to be used as the only determining factor in establishing the job class or making employment selection decisions.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Strong paramedic skills including airway management, phlebotomy, I.V. establishment and injections (intramuscular, intradermal, and subcutaneous)
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written) with the ability to communicate with all levels of staff, management, and physicians in a professional and credible manner
  • Ability to effectively manage and prioritize multiple complex tasks
  • Excellent spelling and writing ability
  • Ability to effectively and competently manage an emergency medical situations
  • Effective leadership qualities and ability to serve as a mentor
  • Ability to give presentations and conduct group training exercises
  • Critical thinking skills
  • Working knowledge of a clinical trial management system, Microsoft Word, Excel and Power Point
  • Ability to directly oversee work and assign tasks

Management Role:

No management responsibility

Working Conditions and Environment:
  • Work is performed in a clinical environment
  • Exposure to biological fluids with potential exposure to infectious organisms
  • May require long and varied working hours
Physical Requirements:
  • Frequently stands, twists waists, squats, and bends neck for 4--6 hours per day.
  • Repetitive hand movement of both hands with the ability to make fast, simple, repeated movements of the fingers, hands, and wrists. Ability to make precise coordinated movements, of the fingers to grasp and manipulate objects.
  • Frequent mobility required.
  • Occasional crouching, stooping, bending and twisting of upper body and neck.
  • Moderate lifting (or otherwise movement, carrying, setting, and placement)of 15-30 lbs. with a maximum lift of 35 lbs.
  • Ability to access and use a variety of computer software developed both in-house and off-the-shelf.
  • Ability to communicate information and ideas so others will understand; with the ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences.
  • May interact with others, relating and gathering sensitive information. Interaction includes diverse groups.
  • Works with guidance or reliance on oral or written instructions from management. May require periods of intense concentration.
  • Performs a wide range of variable tasks as dictated by variable demands and changing conditions with little predictability as to the occurrence. Ability to perform under stress. Ability to multi-task.
