Department Information

Indiana University Public Safety pursues IU's commitment to providing the greatest degree of safety for all members of the IU community, consistent with the university's mission and environment, applicable legal and professional standards, and available resources. IU Public Safety directly oversees the IU Police Department, University Environmental Health and Safety, and Emergency Management and Continuity with a team of approximately 300 dedicated staff on a 24/7/365 operational basis across all campuses.

Job Summary

  • Protects citizens' rights, property and persons; identifies and prevents criminal and delinquent behavior; maintains order and facilitates the safe, expeditious movement of pedestrian and vehicular traffic.
  • Assists citizens, resolves conflict, maintains order, and deters crime; provides information to students, faculty, and staff regarding state, local, and federal law, as well as university policy and procedures.
  • Investigates complaints and accidents, documents information, maintains records, collects evidence, questions individuals, drafts and enters reports in the Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) and Records Management System (RMS); enters information/reports/accidents/citations into all software systems and databases as required.
  • Issues citations and/or arrests law violators; prepares and serves civil processes; responds quickly to medical assistance calls, accidents, fires, disturbances, and breaches of law; administers aid as a first responder.
  • Provides security for buildings and university property; provides security and law enforcement presence for special events (commencement, athletic events, visiting dignitaries, cultural events, etc.).
  • May provide guidance and support to less experienced patrol officers.
  • Performs additional public safety/service duties as needed.

Qualifications

EDUCATION/ WORK EXPERIENCE

Required
  • Bachelor's degree and at least 10 years of law enforcement experience OR
  • Associate's degree and at least 13 years of law enforcement experience OR
  • High school diploma or equivalent (such as HSED or GED) and at least 15 years of law enforcement experience, including maintaining at least 1 specialty (FTO, Instructor, Leadership Academy, Detective)
Preferred
  • University law enforcement experience
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES

Required
  • Possesses a valid driver's license and ability to be insured by Indiana University Upon Date of Hire
  • ILEA Indiana Law Enforcement Academy Certified Upon Date of Hire
  • Current and continued certification in university required courses such as CPR, AED, Blood borne pathogens, IDACS, etc Upon Date of Hire
  • Complete and maintains all required annual law enforcement training and certifications as prescribed by IUPD, Indiana State law, and the Indiana Law Enforcement Training Board (ILETB) Upon Date of Hire
  • Current firearms qualification Upon Date of Hire

Working Conditions / Demands

The role frequently requires the ability to remain in a stationary position and communicate effectively. The role frequently requires the ability to move about the working environment; handle or operate objects, controls, or tools listed above; ascend/descend ladders or stairs; position self to move at lower levels; and discern scents. The role requires the ability to lift and/or move more than 165 pounds. The role requires the ability to detect items in close proximity as well as far away; discern between colors; detect objects in peripheral space of self; discern items in detail; and detect how far away an object is. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

Patrol Officer Master (Mastery) will have an annualized salary of $85,000
