The new University of Iowa Health Care North Liberty Campus will open in the Spring of 2025. This 469,000 square foot facility will be home to UI Health Care's nationally recognized Orthopedics service line, offering comprehensive, coordinated, and accessible care across the outpatient, inpatient and surgical venues. These state-of-the-art clinical facilities will also include a full-service community imaging center, laboratory services, physical therapy, retail pharmacy, and emergency department as well as an array of support services. The facility has been designed to support a superior patient and staff experience; excellence across our patient care, teaching and research missions; convenient access to services; and engaging community partnerships. The North Liberty Campus Emergency Medicine Physician Assistant performs direct patient care, including diagnostic and therapeutic services with physician supervision. Within the Physician Assistant (PA)/Physician relationship, the PA will exercise autonomy in medical decision making and services provided. The PA will also assist in educating healthcare students, residents and fellows as they rotate through the respective departments and divisions and will assist in research endeavors as appropriate.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Provide care responsibilities in the ED as directed by a supervising physician.
  • Obtain medical history and perform physical examination.
  • Assess, assist, diagnose and treat medical or surgical problems and record findings.
  • Perform or assist in and interpret the performance of laboratory and related studies.
  • Perform therapeutic procedures such as injections, immunizations, the suturing and care of wounds, removal of foreign bodies, ear and eye irrigation and other clinical procedures.
  • Assist in arranging for continued care such as but not limited to: hospital admission/discharge; health care facilities; and/or follow-up consultations (including referrals to appropriate specialty and subspecialty physicians as indicated by patients' problems).
  • Provide care for orthopedic problems including but not limited to strains, sprains, dislocations and simple fractures.
  • Perform and screen results of special medical exams including but not limited to electrocardiogram or holter monitoring, radiography, audiometric and vision screening, tonometry, and pulmonary function screening tests.
  • Instruct and counsel patients regarding physical and mental health on matters such as diets, disease, therapy, and normal growth and development.
  • Evaluate, treat and institute procedures essential to providing an appropriate response to emergency medical problems.
  • Maintain awareness of health facilities, agencies and resources in order to facilitate the appropriate referral of patients.
  • Order medications and administer drugs.
  • Withdraw a blood specimen for the purpose of determining the alcohol concentration or the presence of drugs as requested by law enforcement officers.
  • Direct other medical personnel and health professionals in the execution of patient care.
  • Perform duties appropriate to a physician assistant's practice.
  • Participate in educating fellows, residents and students in various programs.
  • Assist in providing services at approved off-site locations and events as designated by the department.
  • Participate in committees within the division, department, College of Medicine and University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students and the public.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned on a permanent or temporary basis.

Percent Time: 50%-100%, May hire at 100% effort (40 hours per week) OR at 50% effort ( 20 hours per week) dependent on available FTE and candidate preference.

Required Education:
  • Must comply with registration and licensure requirements as specified by the Iowa Board of Physician Assistant Examiners which include graduation from an accredited PA educational program and/or certification by the NCCPA.
Experience requirement:
  • Minimum of one-year (1) experience in an Emergency Department/Trauma Center; OR successful completion of a Level I Emergency Medicine Physician Assistant Residency Program (academic medical center preferred).
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage critically ill patient population (of all ages) within a highly- functioning unit/department.
  • Demonstrated experience in area of clinical practice is required.
  • Proven capacity to function with a high degree of autonomy while actively collaborating within a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Certification/Licensure Requirement:
  • Current Iowa license to practice as a Physician Assistant by the State of Iowa.
Desired Qualifications:
  • 3-5 years' Emergency Medicine/critical care experience preferred.
  • Previous pediatric emergency care experience.
  • Experience in an academic medical center.
  • Knowledge of University policies and procedures.
