We optimize our partnership with the UNC Health System through close collaboration and commitment to service.The goal of the Marsico Lung Institute and the Cystic Fibrosis/Pulmonary Research and Treatment Center is to provide the mechanism for generating world-class research into the pathogenesis and treatment of diseases that impact on the human lung. Basic research activities focus on the elucidation of the pathogenesis of human lung diseases at the molecular, biologic, cell biologic and physiologic levels. Clinical and therapeutic studies focus on specific disease categories, exploring pathophysiologic concepts in patients with these diseases, and, with the collaboration of basic and clinical investigators, developing rational, novel ways for treatment of lung diseases.

Position Summary:

This Postdoctoral Trainee position is available through a NIH T32 training program, designed to train promising early career investigators. The Postdoctoral Trainee will investigate the kinetics and function of neutrophils and macrophage subpopulations in developing and resolving pneumonia. One active focus is on the expression and function of ICAM-1 on alveolar epithelial cells, endothelial cells and immune cells. Studies also focus on neutrophil heterogeneity, its regulation and function. Studying these processes in acute lung injury and in injury caused by inhalation of toxicants is also a component of this position. The studies utilize molecular and cell biological technologies including single cell RNAseq/CITEseq, bulk RNA profiling and qPCR, cell culture, flow cytometry, mass cytometry, cell sorting, ELISAs, immunoblotting, murine experimentation, and histology, as well as translational science technologies.

Essential duties of the Postdoctoral Trainee include:· Designing and carrying out studies;· Analyzing and interpreting data;· Publishing papers describing these results, all with the mentor.

Career development of the Postdoctoral Trainee will be an important component of this position.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

A PhD in Immunology, Pathology, Genetics, Cell and Molecular Physiology or similar discipline required and/or MD.

Experience in Immunology, Pathology, Genetics, Cell and Molecular Physiology or similar discipline are required.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

Preferred qualifications include:
1) Coursework or knowledge in immunology (particularly inflammation and innate immunity), cell and molecular physiology, and/or pathology of disease,
2) Experience and proficiency in some of the technologies described above, and
3) Experience in mouse models of lung disease.
