We are seeking a Senior Applications Engineer who will be responsible for building conceptual designs of biogas and renewable natural gas (RNG) projects and supporting business development. This role can be based out of our offices located in Bloomington, MN or San Diego, CA. A DAY IN THE LIFEAs a key member of our Applications Engineering team, this role will report to the Director of Engineering - Biogas where you will partner closely with our engineering team, as well as our business development and project delivery teams, to generate conceptional design process solutions for our anaerobic digestion biogas projects.
- Be an integral part of our safety culture, approaching all aspects of work with a safety-first attitude.
- Work closely with the design engineering team to learn and understand the breadth of processes and technologies available and utilized for turning biomass substrates into biogas and also demonstrate customer-focus with creative problem-solving skills.
- Work collaboratively with the Business Development team and clients to evaluate the customer request and align the technical basis of design with the commercial strategy.
- Utilize process engineering principals and Montrose tools to design the treatment solution that meets or exceeds the customer's project criteria.
- Evaluate our best fit solution against customer specifications, identify any gaps and work with the customer to resolve gaps either through exception or customization.
- Preliminary selection of process equipment necessary for the client's requested project criteria.
- Consult with design engineering team and subject matter experts to build the required content for customer proposals.
- Develop preliminary project capital expense (CAPEX) cost estimates, utilizing Montrose's internal database of costs and equipment quotes, obtaining new quotes for equipment as necessary.
- Develop preliminary project operating expense estimates (OPEX) utilizing the company estimating tools and available information.
- Identify areas of risk or lack of information, and data or information to be collected prior to the next phase of design.
- Lead the customer proposal development process, highlighting Montrose's value to the customer, defining scope, exceptions and commercial details.
- Provide process engineering support and lead the technical handover to the design engineering team following approval from customer for next phase of design.
- Provide ideas for improvement of the Application Engineering tools, procedures and processes.
- Identify strategic partners within the industry and support the Business Development team to develop new potential and retain existing customers.
- Qualify leads via phone, email, and research.
- Serve as a key contact for Montrose customers.
- Schedule sales appointments with prospects and clients and coordinate meetings, host presentations and webinars, and travel with subject matter experts (SME) to client locations.
- Attend conferences and trade shows to represent Montrose and develop/identify new opportunities.
- Develop solutions for our clients by working with and leveraging the extensive technical resources of the biogas/RNG Montrose team.
- Escalate client questions and concerns to management to ensure client satisfaction.
- Prepare monthly reports highlighting new client opportunities and current client relationship status and present results to the leadership team.
NECESSARY QUALIFICATIONS- Bachelor's degree in Chemical, Mechanical, environmental engineering or related field from an accredited university.
- 10+ years engineering experience in an engineering field; minimum 2+ years with direct biogas/RNG experience
- Excited to help identify the best pathway for meeting client needs and expectations.
- Strong problem solving and analytical skills.
- Proficient with spreadsheets and databases, Microsoft Office software, etc.
- Excellent time management, organizational, and technical communication skills.
- Ability to interface with cross-functional teams and all levels of personnel.
- Ability to manage multiple assignments and adapt to changing priorities.
- Able to work independently to manage multiple responsibilities (i.e. self-starter, self-motivated).
- Willingness and ability to travel as needed (minimum 25%).
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Master's or higher degree in Chemical, Mechanical, environmental engineering or related field.
- PE licensure or ability to achieve PE within one (1) year.
