Senior Financial Analyst

University of Iowa Health Care Department of Finance & Accounting Services is seeking a Senior Financial Analyst to help support financial operations for University of Iowa Health System (UIHS) wholly owned subsidiaries and joint ventures by performing a wide array of duties to champion sound financial management and best practices designed to advance the mission, drive strategic decisions, and ensure compliance with internal and external regulations.

The position plays a pivotal role in overseeing key day-to-day, month-end, and year-end accounting and finance functions, preparing financial reports with actionable insights for leadership, partnering with cross-functional teams to promote effective and efficient operations, and training/education key stakeholders of all levels. The senior financial analyst will report to the UIHS Manager of Finance, Accounting, and Financial Reporting to develop and implement solutions that support the accounting and financial reporting demands of UIHS.

Hybrid within Iowa: Following an onsite training period, this position is eligible for a combination of on-campus and remote work. Remote work must be performed within Iowa and will require a work arrangement form to be completed upon the start of your employment. Per policy, work arrangements will be reviewed annually, and must comply with the remote work program and related policies and employee travel policy when working at a remote location

Position responsibilities:

• Supporting the month-end and year-end accounting close processes for UIHS wholly owned subsidiaries and joint ventures to ensure timely and accurate preparation of financial statements in compliance with US generally accepted accounting principles.
• Partnering with key stakeholders to establish and maintain a comprehensive, timely, and accurate monthly financial reporting framework for UIHS in a digestible format with key takeaways and actionable insights for leadership, including analyzing actual versus budgeted and historical results.
• Supporting the preparation of audited financial statements and annual operating and capital budgets by coordinating processes & collaborating with key internal and external stakeholders.
• Contributing to short-term and long-term financial initiatives and effectiveness by establishing and maintaining strong relationships and communication channels with cross-functional teams to help stakeholders understand financial information and corresponding reporting tools.
• Overseeing and maintaining the general ledger chart of accounts for multiple entities to help support financial operations and reporting goals of UIHS, including preparing monthly balance sheets and enterprise-wide account reconciliations, including cash, accounts receivable, fixed assets, right-to-use assets & liabilities, accounts payable, salaries payable, employee benefits liabilities, and intercompany transactions.
• Supervise the accounts payable team in vendor onboarding and ACH and check register file preparation, payment processing, and approval workflows to support efficient and compliant accounts payable processes.
• Supporting efforts to integrate new service lines and practices into appropriate financial reporting frameworks with sound internal control structures by serving as key finance and accounting representative on cross-functional core project teams.
• Assisting with the development of education and training programs for multiple levels of staff to help onboard and orient new personnel to key financial processes.
• Helping support the continuous review of processes and procedures to ensure staff resources and technologies are effectively utilized.
• Support leadership with ad-hoc specialized analyses and development of executive-level presentations.
• Interpret, analyze, and provide guidance on pronouncements from the Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) and other authoritative sources of generally accepted accounting principles.

Required:

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent amount of education and experience
• 3 years of accounting, auditing, and/or financial analysis experience
• Self-motivated with a passion for continuous learning and desire to take on tough and challenging projects
• Superb time management skills and the ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment
• Strong attention to detail and demonstrated ability to perform complex financial analyses
• Demonstrated ability to filter through ambiguity while executing on the details of tasks under tight deadlines
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and in conjunction with cross-functional teams
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to think critically and creatively when working with data
• Ability to work effectively in ambiguous and complex situations
• Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft software applications, including Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Word

Desired:

• Certified Public Accountant license
• Master's degree in Business Administration or Accounting
• Experience in health care accounting
• Demonstrated ability to transform data into useful information tailored to leadership needs through storytelling and data visualizations
• Experience with Sage 100 ERP Accounting Software, QuickBooks, relational databases, PowerBI
• Experience in identifying opportunities for operational improvement and using creative efforts to bring about solutions
