Exemption: ExemptThe Environmental Health and Safety Department seeks an experienced Senior Safety Professional to take a lead role in Stanford's safety risk mitigation with high hazard operations and activities. You will serve as the campus subject matter expert in the field of safety engineering, including but not limited to applications such as confined space entry, lockout/tag, electrical work, fall prevention, shop safety, and high-pressure systems. Reporting to the Manager of the Injury and Illness Prevention Program, you will have a key role in advancing the University's safety culture across academic, research, and operational units by supporting effective hazard assessment and control, safety education/ training, incident investigation and facility design review.In this role, you will:

    Work under consultative or self-initiated direction to develop, implement, and maintain programs, systems, and procedures necessary to ensure the overall safety and health of employees and the community.Act as a lead or technical expert, providing functional direction and training in the overall application of physical safety programs.Investigate accidents, incidents, injuries, and complaints concerning potential hazards or unsafe conditions in the workplace.Recommend and implement improvements in processes, design, procedures, and operating equipment to minimize the hazard potential.Conduct comprehensive, independent compliance assurance reviews of safety policies and procedures; prepare accompanying management reports, documentation, and evaluations.Monitor and prevent potential hazards and unsafe conditions that could be present in the work area.May lead a team responsible for developing and implementing workplace safety programs.
Additionally, you will:
    Provide support as needed during University emergencies.

Education & Experience:
Bachelor's degree in an engineering/ science discipline and seven years progressively responsible experience in occupational safety and health, emergency response/management, environmental science, and/or allied/scientific field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.Preferred Education & Experience:
    Master's or terminal degree in engineering, physical sciences, or other directly related disciplineProject management and team facilitation experienceWork experience in an academic/research environmentCertified Safety Professional (CSP, Board of Certified Safety Professionals)
To be successful in this position, you need to bring:
    Strong knowledge of physical safety hazards relevant to skilled trades and research activities, with safety proficiency in areas including but not limited to electrical work, high pressure systems, shop equipment use, fall prevention/protection, and confined space entry.Expertise in safety management fundamentals such as quantitative/ qualitative risk assessment, job safety analysis, incident investigation, training and risk communication, and building design review.Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with diverse audiences; ability to explain technical concepts clearly and concisely.Ability to maintain current knowledge of and interpret regulatory requirements (statutes, regulations, licenses, and permits) and university policies.Working knowledge of the scientific and technical aspects of various regulatory requirements and potential impact on assigned work area(s).Project and group facilitation skills.
Additionally, preferred knowledge, skills, and abilities would include:
    Exceptional customer service skills, including strong interpersonal skills, such as empathy for and patience with those who need help with their working conditionsAbility to work successfully independently with minimal supervision, as a member of multiple teams, and as a team lead.Expertise in developing and delivering technical training.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:
    Frequently stand, sit, and perform desk-based computer tasks. Occasionally use a telephone, write by hand. Rarely kneel, crawl, climb ladders, reach/work above shoulder, twist/bend/stoop/squat, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, write by hand, sort and file paperwork or parts, operate foot and/or hand controls, carry, push, and pull objects that weigh 40 pounds or more. Ability to maintain a valid non-commercial California Driver's license.

    Must wear personal protective equipment as defined/required by job assignments. May rarely be exposed to high voltage electricity, radiation or electromagnetic fields, lasers, noise > 80dB TWA, allergens/biohazards/chemicals /asbestos, or heavy metals. May rarely work in confined spaces or at heights ≥10 feet.

The expected pay range for this position is $142,815 to $158,000 per annum.Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on a wide range of factors that are unique to each candidate including but not limited to geographic location, knowledge, skills and abilities, relevant education, depth and breadth of experience, performance; as well as other business and organization needs such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the minimum qualifications, departmental budget availability, and market and internal equity across the unit, department and reporting relationships.At Stanford University, base pay represents only one aspect of the comprehensive rewards package.
