The Staff Scientist/Engineer will work on remediation, compliance, permitting and other environmental project teams. Montrose is recognized as a high-end provider of environmental consulting services with a high degree of client service and value.

A Day in the Life

This role is based out of our Sandy Springs/Atlanta, GA location. You will work on a variety of complex project sites throughout the US, with primary focus in the Southeast. You will gain experience with various state and federal governing regulations, with the opportunity to advance your knowledge base with cross-training amongst the multitude of science and engineering disciplines represented by Montrose senior staff.

Key responsibilities for the Staff-Level Scientist/Engineer position may include the following:

  • Perform multi-media site assessment sampling and field oversight of drillers or other subcontractors. This includes planning for the field events and preparing cost estimates
  • Analyze data using advanced techniques, including statistical evaluation, database development and manipulation, and preparing GIS and 3-dimensional maps and models
  • Evaluate remedial technologies, including comparative analyses; evaluate human health and ecological risk; develop concept-level remedial design plans; and evaluate chemical transport and fate in the environment
  • Work with a senior project manager to consult with clients to prepare plans, permits, reports, and assessments
  • Communicate to leadership when potential issues are foreseen, or potential issues arise that may inhibit performing tasks within the allotted schedule and budget
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Geology or Science from an accredited four-year college or university
  • 1 - 3 years experience in the environmental industry
  • Strong communication, problem solving and analytical skills, with excellent attention to detail
  • Ability to succeed in a fast-paced consulting environment where you handle multiple project assignments simultaneously while meeting strict deadlines
  • Ability and willingness to perform fieldwork and travel - ability to mobilize to a site with little notice may be occasionally needed
  • Valid driver's license and a satisfactory driving record
  • Complete and maintain HAZWOPER certification with the 40-hour HAZWOPER environmental health and safety class, and annual 8-hour refresher classes
Preferred Qualifications
  • Related experience is preferred, including experience performing environmental collection, monitoring, sampling, testing and basic evaluation
  • Working knowledge of air, waste, and wastewater requirements and compliance.
  • Experience with regulatory reports and documentation as required by regulatory agencies including emissions inventory, Tier II and annual waste
  • Working knowledge of federal and state air pollution regulations (NSPS, NESHAP, CAA Title V, etc.)
  • Experience with air permit-related tasks, such as routine reporting, testing and other regulatory submittals
  • Possess or plan to possess an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) license or Geologist-in-Training certification (GIT)
  • Proficiency with ArcGIS and Microsoft Access
Working Conditions

Physical Demands

Office working conditions are in a well-lit, climate-controlled environment with minimal safety/health hazard potential. The conditions during field work will vary and may include loud noises, exposure to the elements/weather, exposure to hazardous substances, and lifting (overhead, waist level) from the ground of supplies and materials (such as monitoring equipment and tools) up to 50 pounds, with or without assistance. The work will involve some bending, standing and walking.

Travel

The position will involve travel, as needed and dictated by project work. Most travel is expected to be in the form of day-trips or week trips to client sites. Estimated travel away from home is < 50%.
