Job Summary

This position of Technical Manager is a split Laboratory Research and Laboratory Safety Specialist and is required to be in touch with multiple vendors of consumables, materials and equipment, and requires a professional judgment of balancing the cost and function of the supporting software, materials, equipment, and replacement parts. The job requires communication with facilities and EHS for maintaining lab infrastructure and safety communication with facilities and EHS for maintaining the lab infrastructure and safety according to the FAMES Lab SOPs within the defined specs and according to IU and state regulations.

Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Assesses laboratory research and protocols in order to provide or negotiate solutions to deficiencies and violations encountered during inventories, inspections or equipment evaluations.
  • Serves as the lab safety representative and liaison for assigned locations and regional campus(es) during inventories, inspections and evaluations including responsibility for all reports and follow ups.
  • Conducts laboratory equipment evaluations for fume hoods, safety showers, and eyewashes and enters data.
  • Responds to customer service requests and conduct necessary research to answer inquiries.
  • Organizes record keeping including database entry, preparing reports, and spreadsheets for inspections, inventories, and equipment evaluations.
  • Ensures compliance with state, federal, and local laws as well as university policy.
  • Provides assistance with classroom Laboratory Safety Training and preparation of materials.
  • Other duties as assigned.
General Responsibilities
  • Leads research activities and protocol development.
  • Maintains equipment, including preventive maintenance, scheduling repairs as needed, service agreement negotiations, trouble shooting equipment malfunctions, and maintaining an active list of vendors to respond to equipment loss.
  • Supervises, mentors, and provides training for junior-level staff.
  • Prepares summary data reports, creates and maintains databases for storage and analysis.
  • Ensures compliance with all applicable local and federal regulations.
  • May design and conduct a wide range of complex experiments.

Combinations of related education and experience may be considered. Education beyond the minimum required may be substituted for work experience. Work experience beyond the minimum required may be substituted for education.

EDUCATION

Required
  • Bachelor's degree in a science related field.
Preferred
  • Master's degree in a Technical Education Field such as Physics, Material Science, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent
WORK EXPERIENCE

Required
  • 3 years of laboratory research experience.
Preferred
  • 5 years of laboratory research experience.

Working Conditions / Demands

The role regularly requires the ability to effectively communicate. The role frequently requires the ability to move about the work environment and to position oneself to operate laboratory equipment effectively. The role requires the ability to move objects weighing up to 25 pounds and will occasionally work near moving mechanical parts. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

Advertised Salary

$50,000 - $60,000 per year dependent upon experience and internal equity.

Work Hours

Typical IU office hours are Monday through Friday, 8am to 5pm (EST) with a 1-hour lunch break.

Occasional evening, weekend, and/or holiday hours may be required.
